WAYS TO LOWER MOSQUITO POPULATIONS
Mosquitoes will always be in Florida. That said, there’s plenty of ways to reduce the likelihood of getting bitten. Here’s what you can do:
- Remove as much standing water as possible. If you have bird baths, regularly empty and clean them, and ensure that any fountains work well. At the end of the day, empty pets’ water bowls outside along with kiddie pools.
- Also check for smaller amounts of water because mosquitoes need very little to lay eggs. Check toys and playsets, in flower pot trays, and in the inside of the pots.
- Clean out any yard debris, including damp organic debris such as leaves. This takes away another place where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
- Maintain yard landscape to reduce places for mosquitoes to hide.
- Clean out debris from your home’s gutters.
- Check hoses and spigots to make sure that small leaks aren’t creating puddles.
- Use insect repellents according to label directions on clothing and skin, wearing long-sleeved, light-colored clothes. You can use stronger repellents on your clothing, a type that isn’t to be used on your skin. Don’t use adult insect repellents on babies.
- Physically prevent these biting pests from getting inside of your home by repairing tears on door and window screens.
- Empty out flower vases and plant pot trays to remove standing water inside your home.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kind of threats do mosquitoes pose?
More than a dozen, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): thirteen viruses and three parasites. Mosquitoes can spread the following: Cache Valley, Chikungunya, Dengue, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Jamestown Canyon, Japanese Encephalitis, La Crosse Encephalitis, Rift Valley Fever, Ross River Virus Disease, St. Louis Encephalitis, West Nile, Yellow Fever, Zika, Drofiarisis, Lymphatic Filariasis, and Malaria. Because they pose so many risks, it makes sense to protect yourself and your family during the entire mosquito season. This can last at least seven months a year, or even longer.
How do mosquitoes get inside our home?
They can get inside in plenty of ways, including riding in on you or a pet or flying in when a door is open for just a few seconds. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to prevent that from happening. Make sure, though, that the mosquitoes aren’t getting in through holes in window or door screens. They can fly in through tiny tears. As a bonus, repairing these holes can also prevent other pests from getting inside.
Once they get inside, they may breed in standing water in your home: leaks from faucets, water left over in a vase, or in trays for indoor plants that contain water. They can even use water collected in plant leaves or toilet water when the toilet isn’t regularly flushed. Address any sources of standing water to keep the problem from getting bigger.
If you suspect an indoor presence, adults should wear insect repellent, and cribs and beds of babies and young children should contain mosquito netting to protect them till the problem is solved.
If they get into our Palm Bay home, how long can they live?
Unfortunately, they can live for quite a while. This is especially true with female mosquitoes of certain species who have recently fed off people or pets. In those cases, they may live up to three weeks. Males will only live a week or so. They don’t bite, so they aren’t getting the same nourishment.
How specifically do your technicians treat mosquitoes?
We apply fast-acting, long-lasting barrier sprays: ultra-low volume (ULV) treatments. We use a backpack mister, focusing on foliage undersides in shady places in your yard; that’s an ideal environment for mosquitoes to lay eggs. We offer recurring Palm Bay mosquito control services to keep them away. (When winter arrives and these pests are less active, you may decide to pause treatments.) Plus, if you’re planning a special outdoor activity, you can contact us for affordable one-time treatments.
